How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a prominent role as your furnace prepares to heat your home.

Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t operating promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.

Estimated Repair Cost for Furnace Error Code 228

Before replacing the switch, your Stevenson Service Experts  technician will check other parts of your furnace first. Some other issues can also create the error code, like a clogged vent or cracked hose.
