Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to men and women in the construction trade who have life-altering injuries. Every year the organization honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil endured a major stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg seriously impaired, resulting in foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, causing financial pressure on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila could not afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the incredible grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
